We have formulated to ensure that all the raw materials used are either Food grade and/or (USP) Pharmaceutical grade.

Citizens are urged to understand the content requirements that makes a high-quality hand sanitiser – to ensure their sanitising efforts are effective and that they are buying a quality product.

Please read below for detail on the raw materials and processes we follow to produce our hand sanitiser.

HIGH QUALITY RAW MATERIALS

The Ferro Group has formulated an alcohol-based disinfectant hand sanitiser ‘FERROCLEAN’, using quality raw materials through expertise processes.

Alcohol

All the alcohol used in our hand sanitiser formulations are based on pure potable ethanol (food grade), Pure ethanol 99.9% (USP grade) or which have been denatured with approved pure Isopropanol 99% (USP grade) or other non-toxic denaturants such as Bittrex. The various alcohols were specifically formulated by the alcohol manufacturers to meet the WHO guidelines for hand sanitisers. The alcohol specifically does not contain toxic levels of methanol or ethyl acetate.

Water

The WHO guidelines for water quality specifies the following:

“Sterile water (e.g., by boiling, distillation, or other process that results in water that meets the specifications for Purified Water USP. The USP recommends deionization as one of the methodologies to obtain purified water.”

http://www.uspbpep.com/usp29/v29240/usp29nf24s0_c1231.html

The water used in our hand sanitiser formulation has been purified as follows:

The water is sourced as potable drinking water as supplied by our local municipality (Ethekwini). This water is tested by the municipality to ensure that it meets the requirements of SANS 241-1:2015 for drinking water, the specification for which is based on the WHO Guidelines for drinking-water quality. Compliance with the SANS standard ensures that the water used meets the specification for “Microbiological, physical, aesthetic and chemical determinants”.

http://www.durban.gov.za/Online_Tools/Pages/Potable-Water-Quality.aspx

This water is then subjected to further purification by the Ferro group using ion exchange resins to produce de-ionised water. This step removes any traces of toxic heavy metals that may still be present in the municipal water. Deionised water is classified as “purified water” in accordance with the US Pharmacopeia (USP) guidelines for “Water for Pharmaceutical purposes”.

http://www.uspbpep.com/usp29/v29240/usp29nf24s0_c1231.html

“Purified Water must meet the requirements for ionic and organic chemical purity and must be protected from microbial contamination. The minimal quality of source or feed water for the production of Purified Water is Drinking Water. This source water may be purified using unit operations that include deionization, distillation, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, filtration, or other suitable purification procedures”

A further purification step and that satisfies the requirement for “protection against microbial contamination” involves the use of hydrogen peroxide in the formulation which destroys any bacterial spores that may still be present either in any of the raw materials used or on the inside of the packaging.

Hydrogen Peroxide

The hydrogen peroxide used in our hand sanitiser formulation is certified food grade by our selected supplier of choice.

Glycerine

The glycerine that is used in our hand sanitiser formulation is certified food grade by our selected supplier of choice.

What are ‘waterless hand sanitisers’ and is FERROCLEAN Alcohol-based Disinfectant Hand Sanitiser waterless?

Waterless hand sanitiser is a sanitiser that does not require water to disinfect your hands. Yes, FERROCLEAN Alcohol based Disinfectant Handrub Sanitiser is waterless. Waterless hand sanitiser provides several advantages over hand washing with soap and water. However, they are not effective if organic matter (dirt, food, or other material) is visible on hands. The benefits of waterless hand sanitiser are:

– require less time than hand washing

– act quickly to kill microorganisms on hands

– are more accessible than sinks

– reduce bacterial counts on hands

– do not promote antimicrobial resistance

– are less irritating to skin than soap and water

– some can even improve condition of skin

Is FERROCLEAN Alcohol-based Disinfectant Hand Sanitiser effective against COVID-19?

The best way to prevent the spread of infections and decrease the risk of getting sick is by washing your hands with plain soap and water, advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) [https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/]

Washing hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is essential, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing one’s nose. If soap and water are not available, CDC recommends consumers use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser that contains at least 60% alcohol. Ferroclean Alcohol based Disinfectant Handrub Sanitiser contains >80%(v/v) total alcohol content

Where should FERROCLEAN Alcohol based Disinfectant Hand Sanitiser be stored?

Hand sanitiser should be stored out of reach, and sight, of children. It should not be stored above 40 °C (for example, it should not be stored in a car during the summer months)

– Local and central (bulk) storage must comply with fire regulations regarding the type of cabinet and store, respectively.

– Storage facilities should ideally be air-conditioned or cool rooms.

– No open flames or smoking should be permitted in these areas.

– The flash point of the FERROCLEAN Alcohol based Disinfectant Handrub Sanitiser is approximately 20˚C.

– National safety guidelines and local legal requirements must be adhered to, regarding the storage of ingredients and the final product.

– Care should be taken when carrying personal containers/dispensers to avoid spillage onto clothing, bedding, or curtains, and in pockets, bags or vehicles.

– Containers / dispensers should be stored in a cool place, and care should be taken regarding the securing of tops / lids.

– The quantity of handrub kept in an area should be as small as is reasonably practicable for day-to-day purposes.

– A designated ‘Highly Flammables’ store will be required for situations where it is necessary to store more than 50 L (e.g. central bulk storage).

– Containers and dispenser cartridges containing handrub should be stored in a cool place away from sources of ignition. This also applies to used containers that have not been rinsed with water.

Is FERROCLEAN Alcohol based Disinfectant Hand Sanitiser dangerous for children?

For children under six years of age, hand sanitiser should be used with adult supervision. When used according to the directions on the Label, hand sanitiser is not dangerous for children.

Hand sanitiser is dangerous when ingested by children. Drinking only a small amount of hand sanitiser can cause alcohol poisoning in children. However, there is no need to be concerned if your children eat with or lick their hands after using hand sanitiser. It is also important to keep the product out of the eyes.

It is very important to store hand sanitiser out of reach and monitor children when they are using hand sanitiser.

Does FERROCLEAN Alcohol-based Disinfectant Hand Sanitiser contain denaturants and if so why?

Denaturants are added to alcohol to make it less appealing to ingest. Denatured alcohol is used in hand sanitiser to deter children from unintentional ingestion – the denatured alcohol makes the hand sanitiser taste bad so children will not want to continue once they have had a taste. There are a number of adverse events every year resulting from intentional or unintentional ingestion of hand sanitiser, which is a particular concern for young children.

How much FERROCLEAN Alcohol-based Disinfectant Hand Sanitiser is needed to clean your hands?

Apply a palmful of FERROCLEAN hand sanitiser on hands. You need to cover all surfaces of your hands, the top, bottom, fingers, around fingertips and fingernails, and rub up your wrist. Rub until hands are dry.

How long do you rub your hands together when using FERROCLEAN Hand Sanitiser?

Rub your hands together for about 15-30 seconds or until hands feel dry. DO NOT wave your hands around to dry them because they will pick up microorganisms that are in the air.

I have eczema, is FERROCLEAN Alcohol-based Disinfectant Hand Sanitiser bad for my skin?

It is better for people with eczema to wash hands with soap and water, then apply hand cream. Hand sanitisers can be very irritating to eczema skin. If you must use hand sanitiser, apply moisturizing cream after your hands are dry. Avoid hand sanitisers with essential oils as they can irritate skin further.

How much alcohol content is required for hand sanitiser to be effective?

Hand sanitisers need to have at least 60 percent alcohol to kill germs. Ferroclean Alcohol based Disinfectant Handrub Sanitiser contains >80%(v/v) total alcohol content.

Will over-use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers result in resistance?

Unlike other antiseptics and antibiotics, there is no reported or likely resistance to alcohol-based handrubs. Indeed, the more it is appropriately used, the less antibiotic-resistant bacteria can spread.

Does alcohol in FERROCLEAN Alcohol-based Disinfectant Hand Sanitiser dry the hands or sting when applied?

FERROCLEAN Alcohol based Disinfectant Handrub Sanitiser contains glycerine, a WHO approved emollient which protects the skin against dryness and dermatitis. Alcohol handrubs will sting if one has any cuts or broken skin. Such areas should be covered with waterproof plasters. Allergic contact dermatitis due to alcohol-based handrubs is very rare.

What are the fire hazards relating to Alcohol-based Hand Sanitiser?

All alcohol-based products are potentially flammable and therefore they should be stored away from high temperatures and flames. The WHO suggests that all organisations currently using alcohol-based handrub should undertake local risk assessments.
