Fiberglass is a lightweight, extremely strong, and robust material. Although strength properties are somewhat lower than carbon fiber and it is less stiff, the material is typically far less brittle, and the raw materials are much less expensive. Its bulk strength and weight properties are also very favorable when compared to metals, and it can be easily formed using molding processes.

Fiber glass is the reinforcing material used to build your strength within a laminate or fiber glass part.
Fiber glass is available in different types of material and has its unique material for various applications and methods to suite your needs.

For hand lay-up applications:

The most common material used for hand lay-up applications is the well-known chopped strand mat.

It is manufactured by long strands of E-glass roving which is chopped onto a chain conveyer and bound with powder and packaged in 50kg rolls of 1270mm wide.

The edges are frayed to provide easier tearing of the glass and overlapping without any join lines. There are two types provided by NCS Resins, one being the conventional E-Glass called M144 and the other type is an ECR Glass, which is a Corrosion resistant glass used for applications prone to corrosion and or chemicals called M243.

  • They are both manufactured locally.
  • Resin consumption would be in the range of 2,5kg of resin for every 1kg of chopped strand mat
  • Sizing stocked:
    • 225g/m2
    • 300g/m2
    • 450g/m2
    • 600g/m2
Other material commonly used is woven roving that yields stronger as it has no powder binder but is weaved to form a cloth like looking material.

Long strands are taken and inter weaved, Plain-style, Twill style or Satin style.
  • Plain style being 0-90o one over-one under, one over-one under
  • Twill style being 0-90o two over-one under, two over-one under
  • Satin style being 0-90o three over-one under, three over-one underThis is an imported product
  • Resin consumption would be in the range of 1kg of resin for every 1kg of woven roving.
  • Sizing stocked:
    • 195g/m2
    • 280g/m2
    • 450g/m2
    • 600g/m2
    • 800g/m2

For spray-up applications:

Gun roving is fiber glass rolled up into a bobbin, similar to a cotton bobbin but just in a larger quantity weighing on average 20kg. This is one continuous strand of fiber glass is available in different sizing but 2400 Tex yarn is the most common one.

This product is also available for alkaline resistant applications where used to reinforce concrete.

This is then passed through the chopper head of a chopper gun to produce chopped stands to the length you require as you can adjust the amount of blades on the wheel to cut the strand. The result is similar to that of chopped strand mat, however in this case you have no binder which reduces the amount of resin consumption.

  • Resin consumption would be in the range of 1,5kg of resin for every 1kg of gun roving.
  • Sizing stocked:
    • 2400 Tex

For surface finish improvement or corrosion barriers:

Surface tissue is used as either as a surface improvement of the fiber glass product or as a corrosion barrier which would be resin rich, used in corrosion applications.

Surface tissue is either a synthetic type which is for specific applications and the conventional surface tissue is a standard C-Glass tissue manufactured in long continuous strands.
  • The C-glass is manufactured locally and the synthetic tissues are imported.
  • Resin consumption would be in the range of 10kg of resin for every 1kg of C-Glass surface tissue.
  • Sizing stocked:
    • 27g/m2

For filament winding and pulltrusion applications:

Similar to gun roving, this product called direct roving also packaged in bobbins weighing around 20kg each. This is one continuous strand of fiber glass is available in different sizing: 1200 Tex yarn, 2400 Tex yarn, 4400 tex yarn, 4800 Tex yarn, 8800 Tex yarn or 9600 Tex yarn, each being a thicker strand than the previous one.

Product is then passed through a resin bath and either wound up onto a mould or pulled through a heated dye mould to produce the product.

  • Resin consumption would be in the range of 1,5kg of resin for every 1kg of gun roving.
  • Sizing stocked:
    • 1200 Tex
    • 2400 Tex
    • 4400 Tex
    • 4800 Tex
    • 8800 Tex
    • 9600 Tex

For Infusion processes:

Many products can be used for this application; it’s just to find the correct product that suits your application needs. Mainly in a RTM light application fiber glass products like Swirl mat, Rovicore/Saercore or introducing new products like Ilium.

These product have either a polypropylene or polyester core in between the fiber glass as a flow medium for the resin to easily transfer and wet out the fiber glass.

These products are also custom made but do have common sizing.

Swirl mat:
  • This is an imported product
  • Resin consumption would be in the range of 3kg of resin for every 1kg of swirl mat.
  • Sizing stocked:
    • 300g/m2
    • 450g/m2
    • 600g/m2
Saercore:
  • This is a locally manufactured product
  • Resin consumption would be in the range of 4kg of resin for every 1kg of swirl mat.
  • Sizing stocked:
    • 300g/m2-180g/m2-300g/m2
    • 450g/m2-180g/m2-450g/m2
